Questions about values and faith to ask before marriage

You do not have to believe the same things to be happy together. You do have to know what the other believes, and what part it should play in your shared life.

Why it matters

Differences in faith and values often stay quiet for years and surface at a wedding, a birth or a death. It is easier to talk before one of those days arrives.

Six questions to ask each other

  1. Which of your beliefs do you most want me to understand?
  2. What part should religion or faith play in our family?
  3. What kind of wedding ceremony do you want?
  4. In which beliefs would our children be raised?
  5. Which traditions from your family do you want to keep?
  6. How much does it matter to you that we think alike politically?
