Money questions to ask before marriage

Money is one of the most common reasons couples fight, and one of the least discussed before the wedding. Few people know what their partner earns, owes and fears.

Why it matters

It is rarely about the sums. It is about what money means to each of you: safety, freedom, status or control. Different meanings lead to the same fight again and again.

Six questions to ask each other

  1. What does having your own money mean to you?
  2. Do we want one shared account, separate accounts, or both?
  3. Do you have debts or financial obligations I should know about?
  4. From what amount do we want to decide on a purchase together?
  5. What are you saving for, and what would you never save on?
  6. Do we want a prenuptial agreement, and what would it say about us if we had one?
