Questions about commitment to ask before marriage

Two people can both want to get married and still mean different things by it. For one, marriage is a promise for life. For the other, it is a promise for as long as it is good.

Why it matters

Couples rarely argue about this before the wedding, because both assume the other sees it the same way. Saying it out loud is the only way to find out.

Six questions to ask each other

  1. What does being married change for you, compared with today?
  2. What would have to happen for you to consider ending a marriage?
  3. What does being faithful include for you, and where does it begin?
  4. If we hit a serious crisis, would you want us to get help from a counsellor?
  5. When do you want to get married, and why then?
  6. Which marriage that you know would you like ours to resemble, and which not?
